Position Summary:

Business Development (BD) leads and manages activities related to Licensing, Alliance Management, divestitures, and other deal structures in support of overall company strategy as well as global initiatives related to Licensing, Acquisitions and Divestitures.

The Business Development team collaborates closely with cross functional partners including Commercial, R&D, Finance, Pricing, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, Global and Regional Business Development, GCSO and Legal functions.

BD plays a core role in assessing various New Business opportunities; global NBD projects as well as local NBD projects. It also functions as window for global in-licensing opportunities from Japanese pharmaceutical companies.

The Head of Business Development will coordinate and lead identification of new business opportunities, strategic and operational analysis of opportunities, constructing and leading deal teams, and contract negotiation including post-deal alliance management. The Head of Business Development will also regularly interact with top 20 Japanese pharmaceutical companies to exchange pipeline information, setting up management meetings with Janssen global leaders and identifying potential local opportunities.

Broad business knowledge and experience as well as good learning agility to discuss issues in science, sales & marketing, finance, as well as pharmaceutical industry aspects. Cross functional leadership skills as well as strong inter-personal communication and leadership are required.

Fluency in English is mandatory and fluency in Japanese would be preferred.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Lead Analysis for strategic options for Janssen Japan in close collaboration with CFO/CEO and other board members.

  • Support and negotiate Janssen business objectives in interactions with strategic partners

  • Lead Janssen Japan efforts to support global business development opportunities

  • Collaborate with J&J Innovation Centers and global BD to set up appropriate interaction governance with external partners

  • End-to-end ownership of transactions engaging cross functional team members including:

  • Scouting appropriate in and out licensing and strategic alliance opportunities

  • Leading and managing local partner interactions assessing capabilities

  • Lead negotiations

  • Deal structure discussions/leadership

  • Process ownership to deliver value creating outcomes

  • Obtaining necessary approvals internally and externally- Driving cross functional teams to deliver necessary information for deal analysis and negotiations

  • Challenge assumptions and have a general sense of urgency while ensuring

  • Interacting with Japanese, regional and global teams effectively

  • Managing strategic alliances with partners to ensure smooth transition of agreements and delivery of outcomes

  • Identification, communication and management of risks and opportunities with new and existing partnerships and strategic alliances

  • Leadership of Licensing and Strategic Alliances team

  • Appropriate deployment of team resources and implementation and coordination of cross functional teams.

  • Provide direction to personnel by establishing goals for the function, creating a teamwork environment that is challenging while also encouraging innovation, learning and career development, providing stretch assignments and setting priorities.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Solid to Head of AP New Business Development, D2; dotted to Japan CFO/VP Finance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s / Master’s or higher. MBA preferable

  • Solid working knowledge on scientific , finance, sales & marketing

  • Strong business acumen and proven negotiation skills

  • Strong determination to lead deals to conclusion externally and internally (Janssen and J&J’s approval governance)
